Alright Alex, if you haven't found out yet, I used to copy the tree layer and bucket fill each tree in black and reduce the opacity to about 40-60%. Keep going, nearly there, Neil.
Forgot to say, then put the blackened layer under the tree layer and offset it slightly, then you can go to edit>transform>distort to elongate it like a true representation of a shadow (if you want).
